Water damage classes explained: how absorption impacts drying strategy
Category and class get talked about together, but they answer different questions. Category is about contamination — how dirty the water is. Class is about absorption — how much water soaked into materials and how hard the structure will be to dry. Both drive the job, and on a water loss you're usually thinking about both at once.
Class helps you reason about evaporation load: how much moisture is held in materials, how many surfaces are involved, and how complex the drying will be. A small surface-level loss is a very different job from a building-wide one involving carpet, pad, drywall, insulation, and framing — even if the water itself is identical.

The more porous material that got wet, and the deeper the saturation, the higher the evaporation load and the more the drying strategy has to account for. For contractors, that's not an academic label — it shapes equipment assumptions, monitoring expectations, and how you set expectations with the customer about how long and how involved the job will be. Get it wrong early and you either under-equip and stall, or over-equip and eat cost.
Why the first look matters
The first site visit is when you can capture the visible clues that tell the office how complex the drying will be. Wide-room photos show extent. Close-ups show materials. Notes describe wet carpet, affected baseboards, cabinets, wall cavities, ceilings, or multiple levels.
Compare two files: "water damage in kitchen" gives the estimator almost nothing. "Kitchen, dining, and hallway affected; water visible under base cabinets; laminate flooring cupping; ceiling below stained" gives them a real starting point. Same loss — one file is usable, the other isn't. (This is exactly the kind of detail good documentation captures.)
Class can change as inspection continues
Treat the first observation as preliminary. Moisture mapping, demolition findings, and ongoing monitoring often reveal more affected materials than were visible at first arrival. Document your early assumptions without presenting them as final conclusions — a distinction that matters even more when the job moves from emergency response into a formal estimate or billing package.

Notes should name materials and areas, not just say "wet." That's what turns a class observation into a defensible drying story.
