Storm damage first-arrival checklist for restoration contractors

Storm losses move fast, and so does the cleanup. Tarps go up, water gets extracted, and the site changes within the hour. A good first-arrival checklist helps you capture the conditions before temporary protection or mitigation erases the evidence of how water actually got in.

Storm damage needs exterior and interior thinking

A storm-related water loss can involve roof damage, wind-driven rain, broken windows, siding impact, exterior openings, flooding, or several sources at once. You have to document both the outside path and the inside result — the report should help the office understand how water entered, what it affected, and what needs immediate stabilization.

Exterior observations

When it's safe and accessible, capture the exterior: roof areas, missing shingles, damaged flashing, tree impact, broken windows, siding damage, gutters, foundation entry points, and temporary-protection needs. Note clearly when an area wasn't accessible or when a roof inspection requires safe access or another professional — an honest "not accessed at first arrival" beats an assumption.

Safety first, access second. Roof and height work carry real risk. Document what you can safely observe and flag what needs safe access or another professional — the first look shouldn't push anyone onto an unsafe surface to get a photo.

Interior observations

Inside, document ceilings, walls, flooring, insulation areas, contents, wet materials, staining, and the vertical path of water. If multiple levels are affected, identify each level separately. Storm jobs get confusing quickly because water can travel far from the entry point — room-by-room organization is what keeps the file readable. Emergency stabilization needs

Temporary protection, board-up, tarping, extraction, contents movement, and equipment considerations should be documented as preliminary mitigation needs — and kept separate from future repair or reconstruction decisions, so the emergency phase reads cleanly on its own.
